About Gawith Hoggarth & Co.
The Gawith Hoggarth & Co. story began in 1792 with Thomas Harrison, a forebear of current owners Chris and Rachel. Drawn to the tobacco trade, Harrison traveled to Glasgow to hone his craft, returning to Kendal with second-hand milling equipment. In 1805, he partnered with chemist Thomas Brocklebank to establish Harrison & Brocklebank, a tobacco manufacturing firm in Kendal. By the 18th century, Kendal thrived as a tobacco and snuff hub, leveraging its proximity to ports like Whitehaven, Workington, and Maryport for North American tobacco imports. The town’s established wool, leather, and shoe trades supported a strong transport network, positioning Kendal as a key stop on the packhorse route between Scotland and England. At its peak, Whitehaven rivaled London in tobacco imports.
After Thomas Harrison’s passing, his son, also Thomas, inherited the business and acquired the Lowther Street property around 1830, serving as both home and factory. His daughter Jane married Samuel Gawith, and after her father’s death, the couple took up the family trade, renaming it Brocklebank and Gawith. Following the deaths of Brocklebank and Jane’s sister Ann, Jane and Samuel Gawith became sole owners, cementing the company’s legacy in Kendal’s tobacco heritage.
