The Gawith Hoggarth & Co. legacy began in 1792 with Thomas Harrison, an ancestor of current owners Chris and Rachel. Fascinated by the tobacco trade, Harrison traveled to Glasgow to learn the craft, returning to Kendal with second-hand milling equipment. In 1805, he partnered with chemist Thomas Brocklebank to found Harrison & Brocklebank, a tobacco manufacturing firm. By the 18th century, Kendal was a bustling hub for tobacco and snuff, importing North American tobacco through nearby ports like Whitehaven, Workington, and Maryport. Supported by its established wool, leather, and shoe trades, Kendal’s robust transport network made it a vital stop on the packhorse route between Scotland and England. At its height, Whitehaven was second only to London in tobacco imports.
