Hoyo de Monterrey, classified by Habanos S.A as a global brand, was founded in 1865 by José Gener, a Spanish immigrant who settled in Cuba in the 1830s. He named the brand after a fertile valley in the Vuelta Abajo region - “El Hoyo de Monterrey”, which translates to “The Hole of Monterrey” - a reference to the low-lying, nutrient-rich land that produced exceptional tobacco.
